At first glance, a community center is a collection of amenities: a gym, a fitness room, a classroom. But for Fuquay-Varina’s Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Resources department (PRCR) staff, these physical spaces are only the starting point. Our parks and recreation professionals work to transform brick and mortar into a social hub where the goal isn’t simply “doing” an activity, it’s building a sense of belonging.
In the Recreation Division of PRCR, there is a distinct architecture to success: Activities are the what, community well-being is the why, and staff is the how.

The “what” includes everything from classes to fitness opportunities. These programs provide the structure for people to gather and learn. The “why” is the heart of the mission: creating bonds that last long after you leave the building. Going from pickleball opponent to partner. From stranger to gym buddy. From acquaintance to friend.

Community Center staff provides the all-important “how,” acting as the architects of this atmosphere. Jerry O’Connell emphasizes, “The point of our programs is to get people together to make connections that carry outside the building.”
For Matthew Lorion, the reward is seeing the transformative power of the community centers. “Patrons may come in tired; maybe they’ve had a bad day. But they’re able to use our amenities, get some energy, and leave happier than when they came in.”
Much of the work it takes to create these experiences happens behind the scenes; it’s the 5:30 a.m. arrivals to ensure spaces are ready, or the late nights spent preparing for the next day’s programs. This dedication culminates in moments of personal connection. Becky Rogers recalls helping a grieving man find comfort in a men’s coffee group — a simple referral that offered a sense of community when he felt alone.
PRCR isn’t just offering programs; staff are cultivating a sense of place.
