The Town of Fuquay-Varina is making exceptional progress on its 10-year Transportation Project Plan — a $100 million investment dedicated to improving traffic flow and easing congestion. This comprehensive roadmap encompasses nearly 40 multi-modal infrastructure projects tailored to meet the needs of our growing community. As we enter year nine of this decade-long plan, many of these vital improvements have already been completed, while others are in the final stages of development or scheduled for completion in the coming year. Below is a status update on the progress of several current projects:
Phase 2 – Sunset Lake Road Widening
Right-of-way acquisition is expected to conclude in late July, followed by Duke Power utility relocations in July and August. Construction is estimated to begin in early 2027. This project will add lanes over the Norfolk Southern Railroad and significantly improve traffic flow at the intersection of US-401/North Main Street.
Downtown Varina Pedestrian Improvements
This project is currently underway and is expected to be completed before the start of the upcoming school year. The initiative enhances safety and accessibility by adding nearly 4,000 linear feet of new sidewalk improvements on North Street and Ransdell Road near Fuquay-Varina High School, along with the installation of new handicap ramps.
Recently completed improvements at NE Judd Parkway and N. Broad Street include new turn lanes, through-lanes, and pedestrian walkways to enhance safety and traffic flow.
Alston Ridge Greenway Trails
Boardwalk construction is currently underway, with paving scheduled to follow immediately. The project is expected to be completed by early August. Once finished, this 1-mile trail will connect the existing greenway at Alston Ridge Park to the Bass Lake Greenway network, providing a seamless connection between Fuquay-Varina and Holly Springs for pedestrians and cyclists.
Old Honeycutt/Hwy 55
All right-of-way has been acquired, and Duke Power is scheduled to relocate power lines in July and August, with construction expected to begin in late August or September. Improvements include an exclusive right-turn lane from eastbound Old Honeycutt Road onto southbound Highway 55, updated traffic signals to accommodate the new turns, and protected left turns for vehicles moving between Old Honeycutt Road and Highway 55.
Bass Lake/Hilltop Needmore/Sunset Lake Roads
Following utility relocations in late summer, construction is slated to begin in November. Improvements will include adding an extra lane for eastbound traffic on Bass Lake Road and creating dedicated right-turn lanes at the intersections of Hilltop Needmore Road and Sunset Lake Road to improve overall traffic flow.
