A Legacy of Unity: Reflecting on Black History at Fuquay-Varina High Schools

February marks Black History Month, and for Fuquay-Varina, it’s a time to reflect on a pivotal moment in our town’s history: the integration of its high schools. The journey began with the 1954 Brown v. Board of Education decision, culminating in the 1970 merger of Fuquay-Varina High School (formerly all-white and formerly Fuquay Springs High School) and Fuquay Consolidated High School (which served Black students).

The initial integration saw students sharing the Ennis Street location – the recent former Fuquay-Varina Middle School – for the 1970-1971 school year. To symbolize this union, students worked together to adopt the Bengal Tiger as their mascot – a lasting emblem of blended traditions. This was a first step toward a unified student body. In 1975, a planned high school opened on Bengal Boulevard, ushering in a definitive new era for the unified student body.

Fuquay-Varina High School is currently celebrating its 50th anniversary, recognizing five decades built on the foundation of that historic integration. The school began modestly in 1975, with 35 classrooms and 426 students in grades 10-12. Fast forward to today. In September 2021, the school opened a new, state-of-the-art building spanning 300,000 square feet with four floors of classrooms, now serving over 2,000 students in grades 9-12.

To ensure this crucial history is permanently commemorated, the Town of Fuquay-Varina dedicated its first historical markers in February 2022 to both the former Fuquay Consolidated School and Fuquay Springs High School. This grassroots effort was realized through collaboration with the Fuquay Consolidated Alumni, the Fuquay-Varina Community Development Corporation, the Cultural Arts Society of Fuquay-Varina, and the Fuquay-Varina Museums.

Beyond these historical markers, however, lies the lived experience of those who navigated this period of change. To delve deeper into that history, the Black History Stakeholders Group will host a panel discussion entitled “Inspirations in Integration” on February 22 at 2 pm at the Fuquay-Varina Arts Center. This event will feature individuals who directly experienced school integration and earlier transitions.

Hear firsthand accounts of the challenges faced, the growth experienced, and the powerful leadership that emerged during this pivotal time. Be inspired by stories of an important chapter in our community’s history and discover the strength and courage that defined a generation. Panel discussion tickets are $10 each and can be purchased at FVArts.org.
