The Fuquay-Varina Fire Department has achieved a significant milestone, earning the highest possible fire insurance rating — a Class 1 — from the North Carolina State Fire Marshal. This achievement places the department among the top 34 communities in North Carolina and within the top 400 nationwide. Simultaneously, the Furina Fire District, also protected by the department, has improved its rating from Class 4 to Class 2.

At an August town board meeting, NC State Fire Marshal Brian Taylor (center) announced the town’s upgraded fire class rating. He was joined by (front row, from left to right) Mayor Blake Massengill, Chief Jim Jones, Chief Deputy State Fire Marshal Mike Williams, and personnel from the Fuquay-Varina Fire Department.

These ratings, reviewed every five years, are based on a comprehensive inspection of critical factors including infrastructure, response times, staffing levels, and proactive fire prevention programs. The recent evaluation, initiated in October 2024, assessed all facets of the department’s operations. Insurance companies use Public Protection Classification information to help establish fair premiums for fire insurance — generally offering lower premiums in communities with better protection. The improved ratings will take effect on November 1, 2025.

“This Class 1 rating in Town and the improvement in the rural area is a testament to the dedication and professionalism of our firefighters and the unwavering support of the Fuquay-Varina Town Board and our partners at Wake County Fire Services,” says Fire Chief Jim Jones.

A strong ISO rating reflects a department’s strong performance in vital areas, such as water supply, emergency communications, training, and risk reduction, ensuring firefighters have the tools and support needed to perform their jobs effectively. As the NC State Fire Marshal Brian Taylor notes, “Residents of Fuquay-Varina and the Furina Fire District can rest assured knowing they are safeguarded by a highly capable team of firefighters.” This achievement not only provides potential financial benefits but also reinforces the trust between the community and the department, validating the hard work and dedication of its personnel.

The first Citizens Fire Academy class gains hands-on experience with rescue and extrication. The FVFD emphasizes proactive fire prevention through education and outreach.

Mayor Blake Massengill states, “Fuquay-Varina is, and will continue to be, a safe and secure community, and our recent Class 1 ISO rating is further proof of that commitment. The town’s recent investments in Fire Station 4, along with four new fire engines, aren’t just about equipment — they’re about ensuring the safety and well-being of all our residents and maintaining the high level of protection our community deserves.”
